keep us out of the set ways of life -a severe mercy

12.18.10 Last lunch with my French and German friends

Marina informs Juliette that French girls will spend any amount of money on perfume and makeup.

Juliette says “oh well.” She doesn’t deny it.

Well what do Germans spend money on?

Cars and houses. Investments.

I tell Marina that my dream is to drive on the Autobahn.

She says it’s pretty cool. She misses it.

It starts to snow.

We sit and talk for a couple hours. Marina speaks in Swedish. We can’t understand her but it sounds cool.

We all speak in French.

Guy next to us asks us to watch his computer while he orders some coffee.

On my way home to Raleigh I drop them off and say good bye.

Wish I was getting on a plane to Paris tomorrow too.

You can’t know Europe and not miss it—I can only go 70 mph on 540.

But the snow is just so beautiful.

Steph came home from DC to surprise us. My mom found a potato shaped like a heart. Jody tried on my Great Aunt Helen’s old wedding dress for fun. My dad polished my black combat boots* for me.

You’re never too old to realize that snow is the most beautiful thing you have ever seen. And everyone should feel comfortable spending money on perfume.

*Rach saw “combat boots” on top 10 fashion trends of 2010. She says they’re cool now.
