measuring productivity
Rachel and I decided that you’ve technically had a productive day when you have a product to show for it.
I picked up knitting about four months ago and I began with a simple red scarf. Tonight, four months later, I finished that scarf. I had to finish tonight because tomorrow threatens to be the last cold day of the season, and I’ll look ridiculous if I wear a thick red knit scarf in Wednesday’s 80 degree weather.
Problem is, either way I’ll look ridiculous if I wear this scarf. My beautiful rows and rows of stitches (not to mention hours of time) only amounted to a giant square. Must have misjudged the amount of yarn, or the number of stitches.
Well fine. I’m going to approach the finished product as something to cook with. No I don’t mean use it as an oven mitt (but that’s not a bad idea.) I prefer cooking to baking because it’s where creativity kicks in. Less instructions, more room for improvisation. My square scarf can be secured around my neck with a pin (no one will ever know) or I can use it as a blanket for my Lion stuffed animal, since I don’t have a small child. I’ll find more uses for this soft knit bundle now that it doesn’t remotely resemble a scarf. But, It’s been a productive four months.
Note to self: Next time, knit something far less seasonal, like a headband. Or some coasters. Probably coasters, since I clearly have a knack for square patterns.
(I think if we looked at the things that really make us happy we’d be surprised, and it would be a lot easier to find small doses of happiness in each day.)
